What is CTPAT certification? CTPAT (Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) is a voluntary supply chain security program run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Companies that meet CBP's Minimum Security Criteria are certified as trusted, low-risk partners, which means fewer cargo examinations, shorter border waits and access to FAST lanes.
Launched after the September 11 attacks, CTPAT has grown to more than 11,000 certified partners: highway carriers, importers, exporters, manufacturers, customs brokers, consolidators and 3PLs. CBP and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) treat these partners as low-risk, so officers can focus on unknown shippers and riskier routes.
Getting there takes more than an application. Your company has to show CBP that its security is written down, in place and practised every day. MAZE Consultancy finds your gaps, writes the procedures, trains your people and prepares you for the CBP validation, so your CTPAT certification is approved and stays active.
CTPAT is a partnership: your company secures its supply chain, and CBP rewards you with trusted-trader benefits.

Companies that meet CBP's Minimum Security Criteria are certified as low-risk partners, which can mean fewer cargo examinations, shorter wait times at the border and access to FAST lanes.
No, CTPAT is voluntary. In practice, many shippers and importers only work with CTPAT-certified carriers and partners, and carriers need CTPAT certification to use FAST lanes into the USA, so for cross-border companies it is often a business requirement.
Importers, exporters, highway carriers, manufacturers, licensed customs brokers, consolidators, 3PL service providers and other businesses in the international supply chain. Each must meet the Minimum Security Criteria for its business type.
CBP's CTPAT Minimum Security Criteria cover 12 areas: security vision and responsibility, risk assessment, business partners, cybersecurity, conveyance and instruments of international traffic security, seal security, procedural security, agricultural security, physical security, physical access controls, personnel security, and security training and threat awareness.
Start with a gap analysis against the Minimum Security Criteria, put written procedures and controls in place, and train your staff. Then open a CTPAT Portal account and submit your company and supply chain security profile to CBP. After certification, CBP schedules a validation. MAZE Consultancy can manage every step for you.
CTPAT certification usually takes about 3 to 6 months from start to approval. Preparing your security procedures, controls and training often takes a few months, depending on what your company already has in place. Once your security profile is submitted in the CTPAT Portal, CBP has up to 90 days to review it and decide on certification.
CBP does not charge a fee to join CTPAT. Your costs are the security improvements you need and any consulting support. Call +1-905-826-2919 for a quote based on your company's size and type.
Yes. Canadian highway carriers that haul into the USA are among the most common CTPAT members, and Canadian manufacturers can also take part. Our Mississauga office works with companies across Canada.
A validation is a review by a CBP Supply Chain Security Specialist to confirm your security measures are in place and working as described in your security profile. It usually happens within the first year after certification and is repeated periodically. We prepare your records and staff beforehand.
Every certified partner must complete an annual security profile review in the CTPAT Portal and update its company information, so its security policies match current operations. It also helps your Supply Chain Security Specialist plan future validations.
CTPAT is the U.S. program run by CBP. Partners in Protection (PIP) is Canada's equivalent, run by the CBSA, and the two programs mutually recognise each other. FAST (Free and Secure Trade) is a clearance program for approved carriers and pre-screened drivers that gives faster processing at the border.
Yes. A failed validation, missed annual reviews or a serious security breach can lead to suspension or removal from CTPAT, along with its benefits. Ongoing compliance support keeps your status active.
Yes, every year. CTPAT's Security Training and Threat Awareness criteria require a training program for your employees and records of who was trained. Staff should be trained when they join, refreshed every year, and retrained when procedures change or after a security incident.
